Oxford Walks: Introduction

Schools Doorway

These pages describe three walks around Oxford. Each walk explores different aspects of the history and the architecture of the city and the university.

It is possible for the energetic to complete all three walks in one day, but much better to take a more relaxed approach, savouring the city over several visits.

Each walk is described as a complete unit, but they have been designed to intersect occasionally. So it is easy to mix parts of each walk.

Link Description Highlights
Centre
The central area
The first short walk explores the heart of the city and the university. It covers many of Oxford's most famous attractions. For those on limited time, it packs the maximum interest into the shortest distance. Its simple structure helps with orientation. Visiting the key sites provides a historical framework which will expand as we cover the later walks. High Street

St Mary's church

Radcliffe Camera

Sheldonian theatre

Blackwell's Bookshop

Oxford's oldest building

Oxford Market

Inner
The inner loops
The second, longer walk meanders around narrow lanes and back streets close to the city centre. It covers more of the famous attractions of Oxford. But also manages to cover some more unusual, less well known aspects of the city.
Outer
The outer circuit
This walk completely encircles the town centre, in a longer stretch. As a result it reaches aspects of Oxford which are beyond the normal tourist routes. As a change from city streets we capitalise on several gardens and parks lying near the edge of town, and pass through a variety of residential areas. In the process we visit some of Oxford's industrial past, and explore some of Oxford's literary connections.
